CHARITY IS LIVING PROOF OF EFFECTIVE TRAINING
Sometimes small is beautiful. While Courtney-Thorne has just 25 employees it is the UK's leading manufacturer of wireless nurse call systems.
The Bournemouth-based company works with customers to design high quality, innovative, bespoke, wireless nurse call systems, traditionally referred to as radio nurse call systems.
Courtney-Thorne began as a family-run business in 1968 designing and manufacturing alarm systems for the fire, security and nurse call industries. Its client base ranges from private family-run care homes to multi-national care home groups as well as hospitals and NHS trusts.
A major component in this success is the company’s loyal and staff, says operations manager Faye Cutler.
“Our staff turnover is minimal and we thought it would be nice to reward them for their loyalty with some training.
“After receiving a letter offering free training I spoke to Business Link and Paula Best came from Train to Gain to assess what kind of courses would benefit our staff. As a result we now have about a quarter of the workforce studying for qualifications across a range of skills.
“We are about half way through the process and it’s definitely been good for staff morale – they are enjoying the training and it has also opened up new lines of communication with us as managers and is useful in highlighting any holes in the management process that need fixing.
“It means our staff are getting the training they need to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. Not only is it improving their skills but also making them more confident.
“I can’t praise Paula too highly – she has been great at finding the right training resources for us. She is brilliant.”
The company has accessed Train to Gain several times over the past two years enabling staff to acquire NVQs in administration, customer service and management. It has also signed the Skills Pledge.
Courtney-Thorne has also used Business Link services and has recently achieved IIP accreditation.
In addition it has benefited from some fully-funded one-day courses in the use of Sage and accessed management funding for the management team.
