A Touch of Technology

Introduction:

If the last year alone has taught the care industry anything it's that infection control cannot be taken for granted. With the latest flu pandemic still in the forefront of everyone's minds and MRSA a continual thought for all hospitals it is important that hygiene as well as an impeccable level of care is kept at the top of the agenda. According to a recent CQC report MRSA cases have reduced by 34%, there has been a 35% decrease in Clostridium difficile and patients are noticing an improvement in hospital hygiene.

CHARITY IS LIVING PROOF OF EFFECTIVE TRAINING

Sometimes small is beautiful. While Courtney-Thorne has just 25 employees it is the UK's leading manufacturer of wireless nurse call systems.

The Bournemouth-based company works with customers to design high quality, innovative, bespoke, wireless nurse call systems, traditionally referred to as radio nurse call systems.

Courtney-Thorne began as a family-run business in 1968 designing and manufacturing alarm systems for the fire, security and nurse call industries. Its client base ranges from private family-run care homes to multi-national care home groups as well as hospitals and NHS trusts.

A major component in this success is the company’s loyal and staff, says operations manager Faye Cutler.

“Our staff turnover is minimal and we thought it would be nice to reward them for their loyalty with some training.

“After receiving a letter offering free training I spoke to Business Link and Paula Best came from Train to Gain to assess what kind of courses would benefit our staff. As a result we now have about a quarter of the workforce studying for qualifications across a range of skills.

“We are about half way through the process and it’s definitely been good for staff morale – they are enjoying the training and it has also opened up new lines of communication with us as managers and is useful in highlighting any holes in the management process that need fixing.

“It means our staff are getting the training they need to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. Not only is it improving their skills but also making them more confident.

“I can’t praise Paula too highly – she has been great at finding the right training resources for us. She is brilliant.”

The company has accessed Train to Gain several times over the past two years enabling staff to acquire NVQs in administration, customer service and management. It has also signed the Skills Pledge.

Courtney-Thorne has also used Business Link services and has recently achieved IIP accreditation.

In addition it has benefited from some fully-funded one-day courses in the use of Sage and accessed management funding for the management team.

All Courtney Thorne’s wireless nurse call systems are tailored to each individual care home’s specific needs. Courtney Thorne offers a unique touch screen display that enables the care home to personalise its nurse call system. Emergency calls are given absolute priority whilst the optional on-screen mapping system allows for an instant visual location of the caller to enable faster response times and visual links to call points. It is programmable with up to 999 locations in 256 zones to enable future expansion. The touch screen panels enable staff to change a client’s name without adding a keyboard or mouse and display call logging history with a 10 year memory. They also provide an active call list, call types, common call facility, alarm tones, paging and multiple zones.

All the Courtney Thorne systems operate on radio frequency to offer flexibility and avoid the need for hard wiring. The call button at the top of the room unit call point also has Braille for visually impaired clients and wipe clean fronts are incorporated for infection control. Pear push leads are waterproof to IP67 standard, for ease of cleaning and can be linked to a new radio mains switching unit where it is possible to add a multitude of other devices. The system can be adapted to operate any electrically powered device such as lights, curtains, television and stereo. Other peripherals including pressure mats, door alarms, ceiling pull cords, over door lights, mouth and air switch adapters, infra-red triggers and sounder alarms are available and can be added to the system as required.

Price is dependent on the specific needs of the individual home based on a survey, configuration and specific requirements.
